Award: Engineer of the Future

Award Description: Recognises a youth engineer who uses scientific principles to analyze, design and solve problems.

 

Kaela Barrett is an Aerospace Engineer with a background in computational structural mechanics, design optimization, and additive manufacturing technologies. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, building on her M.Sc. with distinction (2020), and B.Sc. cum laude (2015), in the same field. Her academic expertise focuses on developing computational frameworks for topology and fiber path optimization of composite structures, particularly for aerospace applications. As a Graduate Research Assistant, she contributed to various projects, including the optimization of 3D-printed gradient metal alloy parts under thermoelastic loads in collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was also an R&D Engineering Co-op at Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation from 2017 to 2019, where she developed simulation tools for aircraft load analyses and analyzed structural modifications for compliance with aviation safety standards. Kaela also currently serves as Director of Customer Success and Communications at Novineer, a generative design software company, where she leads marketing efforts, represents the company at trade shows, and ensures customer satisfaction through tailored software solutions.

Mr. Browne is the holder of a MSc. In Structural Analysis and Calculation from the Universidad Isabel I, Structuralia, Burgo Spain. In 2023 he graduated from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine with a BSc. In Civil Engineering. Since graduating school he worked as a site engineer and was responsible for the inspection of construction works, field and laboratory tests on materials. Currently, he works on the national road rehabilitation project to inspect, design and facilitate construction works.

Mr. Mikhail Daniel Browne

Ms. Edwards received a BSc. In Civil Engineering with Environmental (Hons.) in 2019 from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. She was also the best undergraduate student in coastal engineering. In 2022 she graduated from the Imperial College, London with a MSc. in Engineering fluid mechanics for the built, coastal and offshore environment. Thereafter, she was an intern project manager with the Ministry of Economic Planning, SVG and conducted site visits to various project and assessed and developed reports on structural defects  found in primary schools. In 2021 she worked as a site technician with OB Sadoo Engineering Services Limited on the RDVRP- Construction of Greenhill Bridge, World Bank Funded- Coastal Defence Georgetown 1A and 1B. During the period 2022-2023 she was attached to the Port Modernisation Project as a civil engineer and currently she is working as a resident engineer with Smith Warner International Limited on the Sandy Bay Sea-Defence Resilience Project.
